The University of Greenwich and the University of Kent have officially received approval to merge. The new institution will become the UK’s first “super-university” and will rank among the three largest higher education institutions in the country.
The merger was first announced in September last year. The universities are currently considering the name London and South East University Group. Legal documents have already been signed, and the project has been supported by the UK Department for Education and the Office for Students.
At the same time, the University of Greenwich and the University of Kent will continue to operate as separate academic divisions and retain their names.
For students, little will change: they will continue to apply to their chosen university and receive their degree from that university.
The creators of the project see the new merger as a possible model for other UK universities that may follow a similar path in the future.
